Siemenpuu started cooperating with the National Adivasi Alliance (NAA), an Indian network in 2006. The cooperation programme focuses on environmental issues from an indigenous peoples’ perspective. Projects in eight states are funded through it: Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and also in Delhi.
In addition to channelling project funds, political advocacy work is carried out within the cooperation programme. NAA also organises internal meetings within the network and participates in the joint meetings of the three Siemenpuu cooperation programmes in India.
Approximately 110 000 euros of project funding will be channelled through the NAA cooperation programme this year and twenty four project funding proposals have been approved within the programme up until the beginning of 2010.
The Karnataka based CORD organisation functions as the convener of NAA. In addition there are regional coordinator organisations in the programme.
The National Adivasi Alliance has five objectives:
- To protect, promote and renew the Adivasi lifestyle, world view, rights, dignity, expression and indigenous culture,
- To promote the Adivasi way of life and experience of nature’s meanings as opposed to the commodification of life,
- To save wild forests through the Adivasi world view and their understanding of wild forests as a home and a sustainable source of life,
- To develop study and documentation activities by the Adivasi themselves in order to strengthen their understanding of their way of life,
- To promote an inter and intra cultural exchange as well as local and global dialogue on Adivasi life experiences.
The programme aims to balance between the following areas of action:
- Legal assistance and campaigning for the Adivasi life, its values, rights, environment and livelihoods,
- Adivasi dialogue and documentation as well as their understanding of wild forests, environment and ways to safeguard them,
- Hands-on revival of forest cover and biodiversity adjacent to the Adivasi communities and cultivations,
- Strengthening of the Adivasi values and cultures through cultural performances and exchange as well as exchanging visits between the Adivasi communities,
